Diving - staying safe underwater - essential hand signalsHand signals are the single most important and widespread method of communication for scuba divers, while there have been many advancements in scuba diving communication equipment hand signals are still the most commonly used method of communication under water. Every diver therefore should know the basic hand signals which are widely used so the more common ones are outlined below.* Ok - this is to signal that everything is ok and is made by raising your right hand to shoulder height and making a circle with your thumb and forefinger while keeping the palm open with the other fingers extended. * Ok? Ok - this signal is used to ask another diver if they are ok and to signal that you yourself are ok; it is made by raising both hands over the top of your head and making a circle. * Going down - this signal is made by raising your right hand to shoulder height then making a fist and extending your thumb downward. * Going up - this signal is made by raising your right hand to shoulder height then with your palm towards your body make a fist and extend your thumb up. * Going that way - this signal is made by raising one hand to shoulder height with the palm facing your body, make a fist and extend your fore finger in the direction you wish to go. * Which way? - this signal is made by raising one hand to shoulder height then making a fist extend your thumb and move your hand back and forth to indicate confusion about which way you should go. * Stay there - this signal is made by raising your right hand to shoulder height with the palm facing forward and the fingers extended. * Come here - this signal is made by raising your right hand to shoulder height with the palm facing your body and beckon slightly with your fingers. * You lead an ill follow - this signal is made by putting one hand out to your side and the other in front of your chest point in the same direction with both forefingers. * Move closer to your buddy - this signal is made by making a fist with both of your hands and extend your forefingers before bringing them both together. * Hold hands - this signal is made by clasping both of your hands together in front of your chest. * Stay at this depth - this signal is made by bringing your right hand to chest level with the palms down and fingers extended. * Look at that - this signal is made by pointing to your goggles then pointing with both the middle and index finger towards the object in question. * Danger - this signal is made by raising your arm out straight to your side and just above your shoulder level, make a fist as though you are going to pound down on a table. |
