How to become a PADI certified scuba diver

Scuba diving is becoming more popular as an exciting, fun and relaxing sport; however, it does have its dangers if you are not properly trained in diving. You should always take professional courses in diving, as these will teach you all aspects of diving and diving safety. Steps to take towards becoming a PADI certified diver are:

* Always consult your doctor to make sure that you are fit enough to take a scuba diving course.

* Find a facility that offers you a PADI certified diving course.

* Find out from the centre what scuba equipment you will need to purchase, while most diving schools will provide the most basic equipment many of them require that you own your own mask, snorkel, boots, hood and gloves. You will also have to purchase any training materials such as book ad videos as well as your first dive log book.

* Most centres which offer diving courses and lessons will also have a dive shop where you can purchase the equipment needed to get you started in diving. Some of them will offer a reduction in equipment if you sign up for a course with the school at the time of buying the equipment.

* Register for an open water diving course, the cost of the course will vary from region to region and club to club so its worth shopping around.

* Some PADI open water courses include classroom lessons where a swimming pool will be used, this is where you will normally learn how to use your equipment before venturing out into open water.

* Once you have completed the PADI course you will be given a certification card, this card will allow you to have your air tanks refilled and allow you to rent equipment.

Tips for diving

* If you normally wear eyeglasses due to poor eyesight then you will have to either wear contact lenses or purchase a special prescription mask for diving. You should never just dive without wearing anything to correct your sight as this poses a danger not only to yourself but also others diving with you.

* If you aren't sure if you need a full scuba certification course then ask the diving school what courses they offer. Most scuba training facilities offer what they call a discover scuba diving course and this is a much shorter course than the full one, it will however get you started in scuba diving and help you to get an idea about what scuba diving is all about.
